In its May 1st issue, Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper reported that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi met in Alexandria with Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos on Monday during and event dubbed “The Roots Revival Week”. Prominent members of the Cypriot and Greek communities in Egypt also attended the event.

The innovative initiative highlighted the enduring bonds that link the Greek and Cypriot communities with Egypt. It carried a message of friendship and brotherhood from Egypt towards everyone who ever lived here and left tangible and intangible heritagean impact or a human heritage, as explained
by the spokesperson for the Presidency Bassam Rady said.
The Roots Revival initiative was launched by Sisi during his visit to Cyprus at the end of 2017,
 according to the AMAY newspaper.

Egyptian-Greek-Cypriot relations are ancient, historical and extend over thousands of years, Rady said, describing the two countries as “neighboring countries with great civilizations  ”.

Rady added: “The Greek and Cypriot communities that lived in modern Egypt starting from the 18th century had a great influence on Egyptian society. They participated alongside their Egyptian brothers [and sisters] in making a great renaissance in Egypt, whether in the cultural, commercial or industrial fields. They also participated in all aspects of business life, shipbuilding, agriculture, tourism, printing and publishing.”

Through the “Roots Revival Week” or NOSTOS, short for nostalgia in Greek, the visitors had a chance to visit the landmarks of Alexandria, their schools and places where the Greek and Cypriot communities lived.
